forty-fourth post

The brother-sister duo is back and kicking off the year in dark style. The Knife were tapped by the Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write an electro-opera based on Charles Darwin’s book, The Origin of Species. It’s a collaborative work featuring Berlin electronic musicians Mt. Sims and Planningtorock, as well as an opera singer, actor, percussionist, and a pop singer. The percussive vocals at the beginning of Colouring of Pigeons sound like a shaman’s chant guiding you down into the belly of some vast auditory digestive system. Once inside, you encounter numerous voices and mysterious noises while the pulse continually drives you deeper. Eventually, the consonance stretches into dissonance, and you’re ejected out the other end feeling confused, elated, and ready for more.
